Several French artists produced paintings depicting Mazeppa's "wild ride", including Theodore Gericault (1791-1824) and Eugene Delacroix (1798-1863). "Mazeppa" is a narrative poem written by the English romantic poet, Lord Byron in 1819, based upon the life of Ivan Mazepa (1639-1709), a Ukrainian gentleman who later became Hetman of the Ukrainian Cossacks. According to the poem, the young Mazeppa has a love affair with a Countess Theresa, while serving as a page at the Court of King John II Casimir Vasa of Poland (1609-1672). Countess Theresa was married to a much older Count, who, on discovering the affair, had Mazeppa strapped naked to a wild horse, which he then set loose. The bulk of the poem describes the traumatic journey of the hero stepped to the horse.

On July 18, 64 AD, Fire broke out in Rome. It raged for 6 days, and when it was finally put out, left 70% of the city in smouldering ruins. History has blamed Nero for the disaster, implying that he started the fire so that he could bypass the senate and rebuild Rome to his liking. Much of what is known about the great fire of Rome comes from the aristocrat and historian Tacitus, who claimed that Nero watched Rome burn while merrily playing his fiddle.

The Neapolitan painter Luca Giordano (1634-1705) painted "The Death of Jezebel" in 1680. Jezebel incited her husband King Ahab of Israel to abandon the worship of Yahweh and encourage worship of the deities Baal and Asherah instead. She persecuted the prophets of Yahweh, and fabricated evidence of blasphemy against an innocent landowner who refused to sell his property to King Ahab, causing the landowner to be put to death. For these transgressions against God and the people of Israel, Jezebel met a gruesome death - thrown out of a window by members of her own court retinue, and the flesh of her corpse eaten by stray dogs. In the biblical story, in The Book of Kings, Jezebel became associated with false prophets. Her dressing in finery and putting on make-up led to the association of the use of cosmetics with "painted women" or prostitutes.
