In Greek mythology, and in the Talmud, a phoenix is a long-lived bird that is cyclically regenerated or born again. Associated with the Sun, a phoenix obtains new life by arising from the ashes of its predecessor. According to some sources, the phoenix dies in a show of flames and combustion, although there are other sources that claim that the legendary bird dies and simply decomposes before being born again.885,960Direct Sale -

"And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them : and his disciples rebuked those that brought them. But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not : for of such is the kingdom of God. Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein."

"Then Jesus was led up of the spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. And when he had fasted for forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God."

Cassiopeia boasted that she and her daughter were more beautiful than the sea nymphs, the "Nereids", who, in revenge for this insult, induced their protector, the sea god Poseidon to send a female sea monster to destroy the land. King Cepheus consulted the oracle of Ammon and was told that his only hope of deliverance lay in sacrificing his daughter Andromeda to the monster. Andromeda was thus chained naked to a rock, where she was seen by the winged messenger Perseus (son of Zeus and Danae) who instantly fell in love with her, and, diving murderously from above, beheaded the sea monster, which was deceived by his shadow on the sea. Perseus then took Andromeda as his bride.732,900Direct Sale -

In Homer's "Odyssey", the sirens were singing daughters of Earth, who beguiled sailors by the sweetness of their song to the meadows of their island, where the bones of former victims lay mouldering in heaps. The word Siren thus came to be applied to any dangerous, alluring woman. Ulysses, during his ten years of wanderings after the fall of Troy ("The Odyssey"), was determined to hear their song, but escaped their blandishments by filling his fellow sailors' ears with wax and having himself lashed to the mast of his ship.752,900Direct Sale -

THE AENEID OF VIRGIL
Book V!, lines 295 to 304
(Translated by C. Day Lewis)
From here is the road that leads to the dismal waters of Acheron.
Here a whirlpool boils with mud and immense swirlings
Of water, spouting up all the slimy sand of Cocytus.
A dreadful ferryman looks after the river crossing,
Charon : appallingly filthy he is, with a bush of unkempt
White beard upon his chin, with eyes like jets of fire;
And a dirty cloak draggles down, knotted about his shoulders.
He poles the boat, he looks after the sails, he is all the crew
Of that rust-coloured wherry which takes the dead across -
An ancient now, but a god's old age is green and sappy.773,900Direct Sale -

Who is the third who walks always beside you ?
When I count, there are only you and I together
But when I look ahead up the white road
There is always another one walking beside you
Gliding wrapt in a brown mantle, hooded
I do not know whether a man or a woman
- But who is that on the other side of you ?

In Homer's "Odyssey", the sirens were singing daughters of Earth, who beguiled sailors by the sweetness of their song to the meadows of their island, where the bones of former victims lay mouldering in heaps. The word Siren thus came to be applied to any dangerous, alluring woman. Ulysses, during his ten years of wanderings after the fall of Troy ("The Odyssey"), was determined to hear their song, but escaped their blandishments by filling his fellow sailors' ears with wax and having himself lashed to the mast of his ship.1063,960Direct Sale -

"And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil : and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever. Therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. So he drove out the man ; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life."

Several French artists produced paintings depicting Mazeppa's "wild ride", including Theodore Gericault (1791-1824) and Eugene Delacroix (1798-1863). "Mazeppa" is a narrative poem written by the English romantic poet, Lord Byron in 1819, based upon the life of Ivan Mazepa (1639-1709), a Ukrainian gentleman who later became Hetman of the Ukrainian Cossacks. According to the poem, the young Mazeppa has a love affair with a Countess Theresa, while serving as a page at the Court of King John II Casimir Vasa of Poland (1609-1672). Countess Theresa was married to a much older Count, who, on discovering the affair, had Mazeppa strapped naked to a wild horse, which he then set loose. The bulk of the poem describes the traumatic journey of the hero stepped to the horse.1440,873Direct Sale -

On July 18, 64 AD, Fire broke out in Rome. It raged for 6 days, and when it was finally put out, left 70% of the city in smouldering ruins. History has blamed Nero for the disaster, implying that he started the fire so that he could bypass the senate and rebuild Rome to his liking. Much of what is known about the great fire of Rome comes from the aristocrat and historian Tacitus, who claimed that Nero watched Rome burn while merrily playing his fiddle.800,960Direct Sale -
